Updating metadata schema field name

Hi,
 
We have a metadata schema in place for a data record, and we have many data records which have the metadata populated for this schema.
If we were to change the name of one of the fields and regenerate the metadata schema, would this preserve the metadata added for this field or would it delete it?
 
Example:
 
Existing - metadatafielda: data1
Amended - metadatefieldnew: data1

Yes, that should work and still retain the value. Just confirmed in Matrix 5, but I'm pretty sure it would work for any version. You can always set up a quick test and find out, but it should be safe.
