Using content templates slow down backend load times

Matrix Version: 5.5.1.3

We are starting to use a lot of content templates (which are awesome) but the more templates we add to a page, the slower it takes for that specific backend page to load or save. Does anyone know if there is a way we can have lots of content templates on a page without the noticeable drop in speed?

Last year in the Squiz Summit, they Squiz dev showed a demo of content templates with JSON Data instead of with metadata. Seems like better option.

Anyone know how to fix the content template lag when using metadata?
