What sort of version control does MySource Matrix have with respect to documents being opened, updated then reloaded back into a file repository of sorts?

I'm assuming you are talking about a "check-out" based system where a user essentially has an extended lock on the file so they can edit it offline.
MySource Matrix doesnt have a feature quite like that, although it does have locking and versioning.
If you want to edit a file, you should first acquire the lock on the file's details screen. This lets other people know you are editing and allows you to upload a new version. If you close your browser window, the lock will expire after 10 mins. You need to keep the Matrix admin interface open on the file's details screen to ensure your lock is held while you are editing.
