Matrix Version: 6.20.2

We’ve noticed that since updating from Matrix 5.4.5 to 6.20.2 the asset tree no longer expands to highlight the currently edited asset upon login. You have to click the binoculars to get that behaviour, whereas in v5 it worked automatically.
Is this a bug or deprecated functionality? It was great UX for editors!
All I could find was this post from many moons ago when it was meant to be introduced.
